Mbunda Kingdom

The Mbunda Kingdom (Mbunda: ''Chuundi ca Mbunda'' or ''Vumwene vwa Mbunda'' or Portuguese: ''Reino dos Bundas'') was an African kingdom located in west central Africa, what is now south-east Angola. At its greatest extent, it reached from Mithimoyi in the central Moxico to the Cuando Cubango Province in the south-east, bordering with Namibia. The kingdom was ruled by Mwene wa Ngoma (King).

The third Mbunda monarch was Queen Vamwene Yamvu, who succeeded her mother, Queen Vamwene Naama. Her people were then living in the region of Namampongwe, but she oversaw a migration to the region of Kola, which was more suitable for their way of life. The latter region was inhabited by Luban peoples,〔Almanac of African Peoples & Nations page 523, Social Science By Muḥammad Zuhdī Yakan, Transaction Publishers, Putgers - The State University, New Jersey, ISBN 1-56000-433-9〕 one of whom she married. The contemporary royal decrees forbade the marriage of a queen, requiring her abdication in favor of her brother should she insist on marriage. However, Vamwene Yamvu abdicated in favor of Luban husband, and from this action, the Ruund (Luunda) chieftainship developed in the 15th century.〔
The people were split by this event, and Prince Munamwene Nkonde led the majority of the disenchanted populace away from Namampongwe and later settled near the confluence of the Kwilu and Kasai rivers.〔〔Historical Dictionary of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, By Emizet Francois Kisangani, Scott F. Many years later, under Queen Vamwene Kaamba, the Mbunda came across more bands of pygmies, whom they fought and defeated. They then travelled until reaching an unknown great river. As the people were crossing the river, Queen Vamwene Mbaao's daughter Mbayi drowned in the rushing waters.
